Gardener

Summary: HWA is looking for a gardener to join our team who can implement horticultural maintenance and seasonal tasks under the direction of a Garden Supervisor while upholding HWA standards of integrity, aesthetics, plant health, environmental consideration, and awareness of hardscape conditions.

Our talented, multi-disciplinary team of garden enthusiasts includes designers, engineers, horticulturalists, artisans, and support staff who are committed to the creation of restorative spaces that integrate artistry and natural ecological systems into the built environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Garden Supervisor in garden service maintenance visit tasks

  • Participate in all horticultural activities - planting, pruning, fertilizing, and bed maintenance

  • Maintain hardscape reflecting HWA standards

  • Alert supervisor to all site conditions and plant health issues

  • Observe safety and security procedures

  • Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness; apply feedback to improve performance; monitor work to ensure quality

Qualifications:

  • Ability to take direction well and complete multiple tasks with detail and proficiency; problem solving

  • Interest in urban horticulture, sustainability, the environment, and motivated towards the development of professional gardening skills

  • Presentable appearance, professional demeanor and communication with supervisors, crew, and clients

  • Ability to carry a load of 50 pounds up and down a flight of stairs

  • Enthusiastic towards regularly working outdoors year-round and in varying weather conditions

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Gardening experience including planting and pruning (personal or professional)

  • Coursework in horticulture

  • Working knowledge of irrigation/lighting systems

  • Authorized to work in the United States

  • Fully vaccinated against or willing to undergo weekly testing for COVID-19

Landscape Installation Foreman

Summary: HWA is looking for an Installation Foreman to manage landscape renovations of new and existing client gardens in New York City.

Our talented, multi-disciplinary team of garden enthusiasts includes designers, engineers, horticulturalists, artisans, and support staff who are committed to the creation of restorative spaces that integrate artistry and natural ecological systems into the built environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Install professional, high end urban landscapes and gardens including the installation of pavers, planter boxes, plants, low voltage lighting, and irrigation systems

  • Review project drawings, specifications, and material lists to prepare and coordinate planting and substrates for installation projects with the design, operations, build teams, and client representatives

  • Collaborate with design and operations teams to create realistic project timelines and installation schedules to present to clients; communicate clearly on all phases of production including budgets, estimates, scheduling, logistics, material consumption, productivity, and problem solving

  • Coordinate and manage all subcontractors including masons, carpenters, iron workers, plumbers, electricians, and in-house staff

  • Demonstrate commitment as a team leader to organize, lead, and train crew members

  • Maintain a neat, organized, and safe working environment

  • Deliver high quality projects on time and on budget

Qualifications:

  • Education or equivalent in an applicable discipline (architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, project management) preferred

  • Ready and able to start immediately

  • OSHA 30-hour certification plus 10 hours of SST training

  • 3-5 years of experience in landscape and hardscape installation and maintenance

  • Able to lead and manage a small crew as well as work independently

  • Able to lift 50+ pounds repeatedly and undertake the physical labor of landscape installation

  • Drivers license with clean driving record

  • Proactive, dependable, and punctual, with a positive attitude and great work ethic

  • Excellent references

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Ability to assess, identify, and effectively communicate issues on site including the composition of formal reports

  • Experience trouble shooting installation issues including electrical, plumbing, mechanical, masonry, and carpentry

  • Experience with irrigation maintenance, mechanics, and installation

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with an urban design/build process, rooftop construction methods, and interpreting architectural drawings

  • Willingness to work outside year-round and in varying weather conditions

  • Workable knowledge of Microsoft applications (Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.) and project management software
